ART DEPARTMENT

The Department of Art encourages children, teenagers and adults to develop their artistic skills through painting. The curriculum combines theory with practice, and suggests ways for students to cultivate their aesthetic perception, develop their own expressive vocabulary, and become more familiar with the painting media. By studying still life, chromatology exercises, and getting acquainted with the important works of Art History, the student develops the ability to observe, interpret and create his own composition.

The course lasts one academic year, and is planned in groups, with a maximum number of 8 people in each, and are divided into classes according to age:

  • Children Classes, for children from 6 to 12 years old
  • Teen Classes, for young people from 13 to 18 years old
  • Drawing Classes, for Preparation of students for the special course of the Panhellenic Examinations
  • Adult classes

(Parallel programs such as thematic seminars, workshops or summer camps will be announced in each period)

Course Goals:
  • Familiarity with materials (brushes, palette, charcoal, toner, tube paints).
  • The ability to capture basic forms on the painted surface.
  • Building the skills to organize the personal space and the method that will follow for the creation of the project.
  • The use of terminology around the technique and theory of Art.
  • The ability to understand the symbols, values and narratives that a work includes.
  • The acquaintance with other cultures and time periods through the History of Art The appreciation of Art as an integral part of human evolution.
Essential student equipment:

For the Children Classes:

  • 1 block of aquarelle paper
  • 1 set of brushes in different sizes
  • 1 pallet or white disposable plates
  • 1 piece of cloth for drying the brushes
  • 1 set of tempera or acrylic paints (usually tempera Pelikan)
  • 1 soft pencil (4B or 6B or 8B)
  • Eraser, sharpener, scissors

For the Teen Classes:

  • 1 block aquarelle paper
  • Various soft pencils (4B, 6B, 8B)
  • 1 charcoal eraser
  • 1 cutter and a sharpener
  • 2-3 pieces of charcoals
  • 1 set of acrylic paints
  • 1 set of brushes with different sizes
  • 1 piece of cloth for drying brushes

For the Drawing classes, Panhellenic Examinations’ preparation:

  • 1 hardboard 50 * 70cm
  • 1 drawing measuring tool
  • 1 mechanical pencil and retractable tips
  • 1 “bell” shape sharpener
  • White canson papers 50 * 70cm
  • 1 drawing case (to keep the hardboard and papers in place)

For the Adult Classes:

  • 1 aquarelle block
  • Various soft pencils (4B, 6B, 8B)
  • 1 charcoal eraser
  • 1 cutter and sharpener
  • 2-3 pieces of charcoals
  • 1 set of acrylic paints
  • 1 set of brushes in different sizes
  • 1 piece of cloth for drying brushes
